Ahhh… to pop up in Paris !
As we start to shiver through another Aussie winter, the crowds are getting out ‘n about in Europe again (well, sort of…). Who wouldn’t welcome a stroll (and some pop up shopping) around the warm streets of London, Milan – or Paris ?
For the next 2 months Galeries Lafayette “will be showcasing creative Parisian energy with the talented people behind fashion, design, art and gastronomy in the capital. (their) ’Paris mon amour’ is a huge shout-out to all lovers of the capital who have come to discover the streets, sidewalk cafés and iconic venues that make Paris such an enchanted city.”* Paris mon amour will include a variety of creative pop up events and installations.
Within Haussmann Galeries Lafayette there are often pop ups – recently they featured the summer collections of Mira Mikati and some colourful design collaborations by Seletti. The Galeries Lafayette flagship is currently hosting personalised handbags by Emporio Armani, and cycling gear from Cavale (to coincide with the Tour de France 2021 ?). The Paris mon amour festival will also offer exclusive products and immersive events focused on Les Ateliers de Paris (the workshops and studios of designers, especially of fashion and the arts), and a peek into the world of the Moulin Rouge (cabaret sets, dancers and their costumes)
Another iconic store has actually included “various pop-up spaces”# in it’s grand re-launch. Sitting on the banks of the river Seine, La Samaritaine was purchased by LVMH in 2001 but closed due to safety issues 4 years later (it was also losing money and customers… still boasting “you can find everything at La Samaritaine”) Since then, the owners have spent 16 years – and around 750 million euros – transforming the art deco / art nouveau landmark into a combination of “department-store-meets-concept-store”#, featuring luxe fashion labels and accessories, the largest beauty department in all of Europe (600+ brands !), various food offerings and a champagne tasting salon. Later this year a 72 room hotel with day spa will open, complementing the revamped emporium and new office / apartment buildings within the complex. For this week’s grand re-opening, “gallerist Emmanuel Perottin has set up exclusive posters, books, and more from pop artists, such as Takashi Murakami” within one of the pop up spaces.#
At the other end of the scale there’s currently a stand-alone pop up in Paris for Havaianas – just 50sq.mtrs of space in the Marias district ! (they’ve also opened several other pop up / temporary stores across France for summer 2021)%
There’s always something fun about a pop up in Paris – and it must be good for business if the major department stores keenly feature and promote their unique and quirky (temporary) installations…
Doubtless many other independent brands will pop up across Paris this summer, it’s still early in the season. But where ??? You might just have to stroll the boulevards yourself to find them (but do start – or end – the experience with a pop up picnic !)
