Empty Spaces and culturemap
…offer terrific resources for Australian pop up projects…
Last year we came across these local websites… promoting creative and community initiatives within vacant spaces – also providing links to many useful resources and success stories !
Essentially established for non-commercial projects, the Empty Spaces and culturemap websites (from Sydney) provide excellent research tools for all kinds of pop ups. Not only useful for artists and not-for-profit organisations… but surely very handy for any start-up considering a temporary installation for the first time… or experienced “popper” looking to expand their network and skills… or others who just want to join the community and discussion of short-term opportunities across Australia…
The Empty Spaces initiative has been funded by the NSW government through Arts NSW and the University of Technology, Sydney…. “to promote short-term reuses of empty shops and spaces for creative and community development…”* The culturemap community is funded as “…an online home for the CAMRA cultural mapping Research Project and the Empty Spaces Project and is hosted by UTS Library…”*
As a non-commercial resource, the Empty Spaces site ”…publishes tools for empty space coordinators to start a ‘pop-up’ initiative, success stories, information for landlords and local government about creative space reuse for local development and an online community to share knowledge… “* (the online community is where culturemap comes in…)
Empty Spaces offers a handy Links to useful tools page – detailing many international initiatives leading the way in short-term installations… and also the Projects and Initiatives page lists many Australian organisations and suppliers who specialise in our local pop-up industry.
Well worth a visit to both sites…researching the expert opinion and resources on Empty Spaces – and joining the community discussions, reading blog posts and networking on culturemap !
