Extra-ordinary marriage festivities include a pop up wedding shop !
This is no ordinary couple… so it was no ordinary marriage. It included a pop up wedding shop, for some last-minute shopping.
A bit of background… Isha Ambani is an Indian business woman, 27 years old and worth an estimated $700million dollars… her new husband Anand Piramal is 5 years older and set to inherit his father’s $4.5billion empire. The bride’s parents live in a 173mtr high / 27-floor home in Mumbai, with a staff of 600#.
So you’d expect a lavish affair when those kids decided to marry…
Celebrations started at the Villa D’Este, Lake Como (Italy) back in September this year – with a 3-day engagement party (and 600 guests)*
Invitations to the December wedding were sent out in an extravagant case, comprising layers of embossed and fold-out pages, making a diary of the various events – all engraved with the couple’s initials, featuring 3D motifs and pop out flowers. But then hiding under the diary was a fabric-upholstered (and padlocked…) music box, housing 4 gilded cases – with jewellery inside ! Here’s a video showing a guest browsing through the contents (but she eventually seems in a bit of a rush, after more than 5 minutes to open everything !)
Last weekend the pre-wedding celebrations ran for 2 days, at the legendary Taj Lake Palace, Oberoi Udaivilas and City Palace in Udaipur. Entertainment included US pop star Beyonce and several Indian “big names”. Invited guests to the pre-wedding bash were, of course, all ultra-A listers (including lots of Bollywood stars… and Hillary Clinton)
Finally, the actual wedding ceremony was held in the Ambani family residence in Mumbai (that’s the 27-level townhouse…) on 12th December.
So where was the pop up wedding shop… and why ? IndiaToday reported that “Bollywood’s favourite designer” Manish Malhotra conceptualised the pre-wedding weekend event… “Apart putting up a pop-up store and a fashion walk at the venue (he) was involved in the festivities right from the beginning… also designed all the outfits for the Ambanis, which they wore yesterday throughout the celebrations. He did so in collaboration with Nita Ambani, the mother of bride-to-be”@
The pop up wedding store was “set up at Lake Palace in Udaipur for the guests do some last-minute shopping of ethnic ornaments or ensembles for the wedding festivities (with) exquisite items from the designer’s collection…”^
(um, and in case those guests forgot to bring a present ?)
