Flood waters encourage a pop up response

Pop up shops help to ease the retail woes in Lismore NSW

Just a couple of weeks ago, the CBD of (northern NSW city) Lismore went under water… again. Floodwater from the Wilsons River rose to a peak of 11.57mtrs on 31st March, the highest level since 1974 (12.2mtrs)

NorthernStar.com.au kept residents updated as the water kept rising, starting with an ominous prediction the day before…”Lismore is being warned to brace for a bigger flood than 2005 and 2001…” At 930am on Friday 31st a new comment was posted – “It is now inevitable that businesses on Woodlark St will be inundated…several businesses are already metres underwater…” And at 7pm they reported that “Keen St is submerged, completely engulfing shops up to their awnings…”*

On 2nd April DailyTelegraph.com.au reported that “every single business in the CBD of Lismore (had been) submerged by up to 3.5mtrs of water”. Lismore Mayor Issac Smith said some businesses had lost everything – (but) ”we know our community will rally behind our local businesses”#

The basement at a local shopping mall – Lismore Square – was flooded, with water coming halfway up the carpark escalators. But the centre quickly re-opened, and is now hosting a number of pop up shops… 34 temporary retail spaces have been made available (with tables, power and security – at no charge) for local businesses affected by the floods. Just across the CBD, the Clyde Campbell Carpark is also being used for pop up shops, with banks and other service providers open for business while their premises are dried out and cleaned. One local resident was bit miffed when he went along to his bank (temporarily a pop up) for his fortnightly “pocket money” withdrawal… but the bank wasn’t handling cash !

These pop up shops are indeed a great response by the local community – helping retailers get back to business while the clean-up continues…
