Grand Opening Today ! (and it’s also) Grand Closing Tonight !

Free pop up shops on offer in London – but there’s a (smart) catch !

This week in central London there is a series of smart pop up shops – quite literally. From Monday ’til the weekend there’ll be different businesses trading out of 36 South Molton Street (just off Oxford Street, near the Bond Street ‘tube station). Each of the 6 businesses popping up have entered an on-line competition by opening an account with Swedish technology vendor iZettle… the prize being a single-day retail store in Mayfair !

The winners of the competition have each been given their own 12 hours of trading, with the daily fit-out and branding provided by iZettle. Lucky businesses in the iZettle 12 Hour Store include an upside-down pot plant store on Monday, printed home accessories (inspired by Scottish scenery and heritage) for Tuesday, printed scarves and collars Wednesday, blended loose-leaf teas on Thursday, a fashion brand “inspired by yoga, music and spirituality” for Friday… and finally British Christmas Jumpers (“from snowflakes to cute snowmen and much more…”) on Saturday.

So what’s the catch ? The trading businesses must process their credit and debit card payments via iZettle’s mobile-based technology… which is where the “smart” (phone) comes in. That requirement is not hard to apply – seeing as many pop up shops already use mobile services and apps to support their temporary stints in retail. The 12 Hour Store is a clever marketing concept for iZettle (the 6 day event will enjoy some healthy media attention) – it’s also a great way to demonstrate the iZettle products (and their application in pop ups) through the week in London.
