Has Kanye’s pop up bubble burst ?
Celebrity Kanye West has had huge success with pop up shops – but was this one a flop ?
Last weekend international rapper (singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur and fashion designer*) Kanye West was associated with yet another Australian pop up shop… launching his collaboration with local underwear brand 2XU in Sydney. But it seems that Oxford Street pop up wasn’t much of a success – and closed within just 45 minutes.
Several media sources stated that customers failed to show when doors opened at 9am on Saturday… so they cancelled the whole thing. That’s in contrast to previous Kanye events (his Yeezy / Life of Pablo pop up stores), when fans had camped out overnight and created havoc in their eagerness to purchase limited edition and new-release street wear. But on Saturday the pavement was empty – except for crowds lining up for a Ksubi warehouse sale further down the road ! A store representative said the Kanye West / 2XU pop up closure was “a change of direction from head office and unfortunately the event has been cancelled”#
The previous weekend we had a fun pop up event in Melbourne – with the Chapel Street Service Denim store urging customers to line up in their underwear and receive a free pair of jeans. The offer was limited to the first 100 people who came in their undies (“t-shirt optional”) and signed up to a mailing list. I’ve searching high ’n low for some images of that event, but can’t find any on-line (maybe it’s just as well…)
What is it about Chapel Street and bare bodies ? The local trader’s association – Chapel Street Precinct – is currently promoting their PROVOCARÉ arts festival with an installation by photographer Spencer Tunick. Tunick’s project is titled “Return of the Nude” and will feature “hundreds of Melbournians while using Chapel Street as his canvas…” Volunteers are being enlisted now – and yep, they’ll be asked to shed their clothes for a mass nude photoshoot (that’s brave… Melbourne in July… brrr !)
