Offspring pops up
Another Melbourne TV series gets onboard with a pop-up story !
Network Ten’s quirky drama series Offspring has caught the pop-up bug, using the concept to launch one character’s food business. Over recent episodes we’ve watched as Jimmy has expanded his start-up “taqueria” enterprise to 3 temporary sites around Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs… and consider the next step of a permanent home.
Youngest sibling in the Proudman family, Jimmy was always a bit of a gangly, goofy character… “an imaginative young man with a thirst for experiences…” – but somehow he’s stumbled on a formula for success. Offspring episode 8 (of series 5, screened on July 2nd) saw sister Billy nervously suggest a significant next phase for the young business… she had found a vacant café and (with the help of a rather dodgy power-point presentation) proposed taking on the lease for a “home-based commercial kitchen (where the) cooking is done to supply the existing pop ups…” with ”potential to be a permanent restaurant to work alongside Jimmy’s Tacos, as an a la carte dining experience”. One week later and there’s a scene inside the empty café (are they still considering the location ?… Jimmy says “this might just be the one…”). Great stuff, excellent use of pop up being woven into the storyline… I can’t wait to see how the taco theme develops !
The Offspring use of pop up has screened before Channel Nine’s reality TV show The Block goes to air – I imagine The Block will include footage of their recent Prahran pop up shop (the Prahran apartment ‘Block series is still in post-production ?)
