Pop up on a (THE) Greek island !

Mykonos hosts a summer season of pricey pop up stores.

When “one” thinks of a relaxing (European) island holiday, surely there can be no other destination in mind… the idyllic, sun-soaked, lazy island of Mykonos. Ha ! Anyone who’s ever been to the Greek islands mid-year knows that’s not quite the reality… with hoards of back-packers jostling their way on and off ferries, 1000’s of day-tripping cruise-ship visitors swarming those narrow alleyways – and the Meltemi wind (late summer) which blows everything out to sea ! I’ve done it a few times, always amazed how those islands retain their charm and the locals maintain (most of) their humour, amidst the circus. The strategy, I think, is to take a deep breath and stay calm… there’s always aύριο (tomorrow), or the day after…

Last year I mentioned the new up-market shopping destination of Nammos Village, not far from the main Mykonos township (by scooter if you’re brave, bus if you’re sensible). At time of publishing that June 2018 summertime starts with pop up luxe article, only Dior and Oscar de la Renta had opened their pop up residency – but they were soon joined by Ermenegildo Zegna, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and others*.

The main Nammos precinct (beach club, restaurants, bars) opened their 2019 season at Easter, but the 12,000sq.metres of pop up retail waited another month – with Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Off-White and Christian Louboutin now headlining the list of luxe brands settling into the Village for summer#

In researching this article for the 2019 pop up season, I came across reports of a raid by the “Greek tax authorities” last year – in which they seized two point of sale (POS) machines used by Louis Vuitton. By law “all POS in Greece must be linked to Greek banks to prevent companies from evading taxes” – but LV had theirs linked to Swiss banks, “bypassing the Greek system all together”. It seems the Louis Vuitton seizure was “part of a larger operation that closed numerous establishments and fined others…”^
