Popping up in bank space
Often it’s a “blank space” we transform for new pop up installations… in the UK they’re using spaces in old banks too !
There’s been some good news for British non-profit enterprises and entrepreneurs looking for short -term, low cost locations… UK-based charity 3Space has recently partnered with Barclays Bank to utilize properties which are otherwise “under-utilised” (ie…. empty !)
The initial Hatch project by 3Space launched in Oxford last month… where an empty bank building has been transformed with desk and meeting spaces, plus handy workshop tools and machines within the old vault. The Oxford location expects to be followed by another three Barclays properties this year (mostly as shared community spaces… office-based uses rather than retail…)
3Space is “an innovative charity which unlocks the value of empty commercial property for community use” – the new Hatch partnership “aims to transform under-utilised Barclays’ properties into space for social entrepreneurs, early stage local businesses and community groups”. The 3Space model provides a simple matching service between social entrepreneurs and property holders – at no cost to users (except for a refundable deposit) and only for a short time (the locations operate on Meanwhile Use leases… typically subject to short notice periods)
Surely there are loads of vacant spaces around Melbourne, owned or leased by the major corporates…. Wouldn’t it be a great community initiative to offer those locations up for “meanwhile uses” ? Please contact us at popUPshopsMelbourne if you have a property or an idea… let’s see if we can make this happen !
