Who’s ready to pop up at home ?
The proliferation of pop up has certainly spread around the world… now it seems time to bring it home (literally !) Recently there’s been a couple of mentions of pop ups happening in private spaces in North America, but the “at-home” concept has been brewing in Australia for a while.
The team at local design and trend blog The Design Files has been doing Open House events in homes for the past couple of years, and so has The Cool Hunter – both of them have done “house” events in Melbourne and Sydney. Those pop up installations were highly-curated – showcasing a range of very cool gift and homeware products, artworks and apparel… and they attracted a LOT of interest. Even though the pop ups were held in private spaces, there was no sign of owners or residents as masses of curious visitors stepped through their doors ! I’d imagine that Lucy and her TDF crew are well advanced in planning their 2014 Open Houses… (assuming they’ll be on again this year – they usually “open” around the end of November)
In Cincinnati (USA) there’s a husband and wife team offering the first floor space of their home for pop up stores and parties… They’ve called their venture Simple Space – “kind of like an extension of our living room… (but) a container, an empty box”. Levi Bethune says… “it’s not about what I want to happen in there, it’s about what you want…”
And last week, Canadian coffee and doughnut brand Tim Hortons moved into a standard suburban home in Calgary. Overnight they erected a huge neon sign over the garage, fitted coloured awnings across the windows… and left gift baskets on neighbourhood doorsteps. The single-day pop up offered free coffee, doughnuts, bagels and muffins… all as a promotional stunt to enlist new staff. Their Twitter account announced “We’re not just in your neighbourhood, we’re your neighbours. Join our team” – and then linked the article to an employment application page !
Are you ready to pop open the doors to your home ?
