A feel-good / swap-over pop-up shop

The solution to Nanna’s Christmas socks (again)… a swap-over pop-up !

Here’s a clever initiative from the folk at Melbourne Central – a shop which can turn unwanted gifts and purchases into things you love ! The Returning is a swap-over pop-up shop which accepts new items purchased anywhere (online, overseas, even other local shopping centres) and provides a gift card in exchange – to the full value of that unloved item. That’s amazing… you can trade in those ugly slippers, kooky teapots, self-help books… for something you’ll actually use !

The Returning will donate the trade-ins to a worthy cause, whilst promoting shoppers to visit shops within Melbourne Central. Centre Manager Ryan Ling was quoted saying that “almost half of the Australian population keep unwanted gifts in a cupboard, while 33 per cent use the product regardless of if they want it or not…the appeal of a pop-up store to return or swap gifts is strong: 84 per cent of Australians would be extremely likely to visit“*

Um, not that anyone really needs an excuse to drop into Melbourne Central over the next couple of weeks… over 300 retailers will be buzzing with activity !

This feel-good / swap-over pop-up shop will be open at Melbourne Central (LaTrobe / Swanston Streets Melbourne) from tomorrow Friday 13th through to Friday 27th December (except Christmas Day).

There are daily limits to the value of gift cards handed out (if not used, the balance rolls over to the next day) – but “shoppers” can also browse items already returned and do a swap. Or… if they don’t have anything to hand in they can purchase the stock ! All proceeds and items left over will be donated to Melbourne City Mission – supporting homeless and at-risk young people.

And there some are conditions of course – basically that the goods must be “brand new” and with a valid receipt (also a parent / legal guardian if the claimant is under 18 years old). Although on the 2 days after Christmas (26th and 27th December) they’ll accept items without the receipt – as long as they’re new and staff can verify a current online price.

Oh Nanna, thanks for the awesome Christmas Tshirt (oops, I mean socks, again…)
