A shoebox popup, for sharing stories

Here’s a popup in a (giant) shoebox.

Melbourne is about to host a popup featuring old shoes – and you’re expected to slip them on ! A Mile in My Shoes is a curated audio event which invites the audience to experience a collection of personal stories, whilst wearing the ‘tellers shoes.

Inside the popup shoebox (actually a shipping container…) you’ll remove your footwear, slip on another pair, grab a set of headphones… and go out for a walk (to experience the world through someone else’s shoes…). How far you go is up to you – some visitors will stay close by, whilst others are encouraged to wander around the Arts Centre precinct (they provide a handy map). The stories are suitable for ages 10+, and for younger feet there’s a “detective” challenge (to find nearby sculptures wearing ballet shoes !)

Each of the Mile in My Shoes stories is told in the teller’s own voice, enticing visitors to “experience the world from a stranger’s perspective”*. The project aims to explore the concept of empathy – how it “… can not only transform our personal relationships but also help tackle global challenges such as prejudice, conflict and inequality.”* The flyer provided by Arts Centre Melbourne says the installation “is a powerful work that explores universal human emotions such as love, affection, fear, sympathy and compassion”

This event has travelled the world, each time slightly different… the Melbourne popup will focus on the theme of water – 23 stories (and shoes) were donated by locals, whilst 12 more stories (more shoes) have been collected along the way.

I’d suggest… if you’re planning to visit / participate in this popup… bring an open mind and clean feet (and socks) !
