International arts pop up on Collins Street

An international organisation will raise funds for emerging artists – via a Melbourne pop up !

This week the “Paris end” of Melbourne’s Collins Street will see an unlikely installation – a pop up store nestled amongst the flagship stores of global fashion brands, within the most desirable location on the block… There’s nothing unusual about a collaboration of artists to showcase their wares… (except when those artists are kinda high-end themselves) – but what really caught my eye about this one is the address…

The House of Voltaire is popping up within the uber-iconic (is there such a word ?) townhouse at 80 Collins Street… home for 75 years to Le Louvre (a Melbourne fashion “instituition”). This is one of the last-remaining heritage houses at the top end of town – and it’s certainly seen some memorable events and clientele… “artists, storytellers and people of interest”* including the darlings of Melbourne “society” flocked to Le Louvre between 1935 and 2010 (graciously, of course…) Although that business moved out several years ago, the 3 storey house remains an enduring symbol of the glamorous years on Collins Street, now standing alone and dwarfed by steel and glass office towers… How many Melburnians (adults and children alike) can recall walking past those shrouded windows, wondering what was hiding within ? The Le Louvre* website describes their founder’s aspirations for a French-style salon… “young Miss Wightman from Ballarat dreamt up this magic space with huge gilt mirrors, leopard skins draped over sofas, swags of fabric tossed in reckless abandon and crystal chandeliers…”

The House of Voltaire is an arts-focused shop – featuring an assortment of homewears, clothing, prints and artworks. This store pops up in London’s Mayfair district every couple of years (also seen in Miami USA last December), raising funds to benefit emerging artists, stage exhibitions and educational initiatives in the UK. Amongst the international, limited edition art works on offer in Melbourne will be several local brands… and a “dining table” event created by chef Peter Gunn (formerly @ Attica) – a “limited edition” lunch or dinner for just 12 good friends ($3480, includes a butler…)
