Kingston Art’s Pop Up Bar returns – woo hoo ! (and more)
Local bands and the community will come together for some (more) serious fun in Moorabbin this month…
Anyone scooting along the Nepean Highway early last year would’ve noticed a 40’ shipping container parked right outside the Kingston City Hall (Moorabbin). Couldn’t miss it really… or the collection of pallets, food trucks and potted plants, those words POP UP BAR splashed boldly across the front… and a buzz of activity over several evenings ! The Pop Up Bar ran for 3 weeks in 2013 (4 nights) as an initiative of Kingston Arts – and it’s coming back this week.
Launching tomorrow night (Friday 7th February), this year’s Pop Up Bar will once-again feature a diverse selection of bands – with funky DJs spinning between the live sets, a food truck and sausage sizzle on offer – and of course the bright-blue Pop Up Bar ! This is essentially a local event for local residents and workers, but all are welcome (it’s free entry !)
Kingston Arts have developed the event (hopefully an annual festival) with the community foremost in mind – many of the suppliers and performers are local, the wooden pallets (used as seating and space dividers) are a nod to the industrial estates out the back of Moorabbin – and to sustainability. And speaking of sustainability… a clever twist at last year’s Pop Up Bar was the notion of serving up wines in old jam jars – with the customer’s own name pasted on the outside !
Steve at Kingston Arts told me the shipping container is a pretty versatile unit – the February festival has it decked out with beer taps and fridges for the bar, but it can also travel to other venues and events for use as a coffee or food outlet, shop or service area (which makes it ideal for any kind of event needing a substantial and secure structure). The Kingston municipality is huge – running from Moorabbin and inland to Clayton South, all the way down to Patterson Lakes… that’s a lot of territory to cover, and many residents to entertain ! The container could be available to other users between Kingston festivals…. it may be worth contacting Steve if you have the need for a temporary structure at your event (?)
This year’s Kingston Pop Up Bar programme includes distinct themes of music over each of the nights – so it’ll be worth going back each week (that’s all your Fridays booked for the next 6 weeks !)
Where – Kingston City Hall car park, corner of Nepean Highway and South Road Moorabbin
When – every Friday from 7th February until 14th March, starting at 4pm till…. late
Amended 7th February (opening night of the Pop Up Bar !) – this event will run for 6 weeks – from tonight until 14th March !
