pop stars pop up

…what could Bob Dylan, One Direction and Taylor Swift have in common ? Maybe more than you think (or maybe not)…

Back in September, the legendary Bob Dylan launched his new record “Tempest”. There’s nothin’ unusual about that, after all he’s released 34 other albums before this one ! The difference this time is that the album featured in his own pop up stores – simultaneously open in New York, London and Los Angeles. Just in case you couldn’t decide (or get enough Bob), the stores offered an assortment of the CD with book, CD with harmonica, CD with T-shirt, and of course an LP (vinyl !) version – many of the items selling out as soon as the stores opened.

British-Irish mega boyband One Direction has also been rolling out their brand of pop up stores across the globe – 6 months ago in Chapel Street (South Yarra, Melbourne) and then Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Wellington (New Zealand)…. More recently they’ve had stores in Toronto and Chicago – creating “fandemonium” everywhere they go ! And next week it will be New York City’s turn… most likely offering the same mixture of One Direction merchandise – clothing, posters, dolls, games, toys, bags, stationery, calendars, clocks, walkie-talkies… (good heavens, the list seems endless !) Did I suggest there’s a One Direction “brand”…that’s kind of an under-statement ! But it seems there may be an even bigger pop star brand than these guys….

Last month, recording star Taylor Swift released her latest album “Red”, turning a New York City store into 13 mini-showrooms – each showcasing one of Ms. Taylor’s (many) brand partners… Elizabeth Arden perfume, CoverGirl make up, Sony CyberShot cameras, American Greetings (e-cards), pizzas by Papa John’s…. How’s all that for making the most of a pop star’s “brand” ?

British singer-songwriter Tulisa Contostavlos (previously part of hip-hop group “N-Dubz”, and currently a judge on UK’s The X Factor*) has recently opened a “Tulisa for BANK” pop up in Westfield’s White City (West London) shopping centre – offering her fashion range of “skater and cut-out dresses, animal-printed body hugging outfits and sexy playsuits in hues like red, lime green and neon yellow…”#

And Chas Hodges (half of UK cockney music duo Chas and Dave) also got into the swing last month, at the opening of a pop up store in Margate. Apparently he teamed up with TV personality / retail guru Mary Portas for a sing-a-long rendition of his hit “Down to Margate”. No I’d never heard it before either…

And what else might Taylor Swift and One Direction have in common ? Well rumours are flying that the “casual fling” (earlier this year) between Ms. Swift and band member Harry Style might be back on again… (it ended the first time when she found out he’d cheated…)  Sorry, I know that’s not really relevant to an article on pop up shops, I got a bit distracted there…
