Port Phillip leads the way with bushfire relief pop up support

The City of Port Phillip reached out to city businesses, supporting regional communities.

The “placemaking” team at City of Port Phillip has been very busy (as usual) – but especially hectic in the first few weeks of 2020, as they swung to action in response to Victorian communities affected by the summer bushfires. On 2nd February Port Phillip supported the ”High Country Comeback 2020” market day in Port Melbourne, with around 100 regional producers and makers showcasing (selling) their goodies (and gate proceeds going to local CFA districts and wildlife rescue groups)

Meanwhile, the placemaking guys were also developing a more sustained initiative, reaching out to a load of businesses to open (not just one, but two !) pop up shops on St Kilda’s Fitzroy Street.

The Fitzroy Street / High Country and Gippsland Comeback bushfire relief pop up shops opened on 29th February, aiming to trade every weekend for 2 months (but they’ve cancelled this weekend 14th-15th March). Over 100 retail and hospitality businesses from the Victorian High Country and Gippsland regions are participating… bringing their wine and cheeses, sweet and savoury condiments and various merchandise (and goodwill) to St Kilda. The initiative hopes to support country businesses doing it (very) tough after those recent fires… providing an opportunity to showcase their wares (and sell some product), engage with city folk – and encourage us to visit the regions sometime soon, spending time (and money) in their devastated communities.

The process started, I suppose, by the generous donation of space by 2 local landlords… awesome venues which were (temporarily) standing empty. The placemakers also reached out to corporates to provide the transport of products in from country Victoria, electricity and gas to power the stores, online and marketing communications, also the provision of loaned equipment and shopfittings – even accommodation for the vendors coming to St Kilda to trade in those pop up stores. (I was very pleased to provide instant retail fixtures at 107 Fitzroy Street… shelves and displays, tables and chairs, racks and mirrors…)

The support of the Port Phillip and High Country Comeback teams continue as those stores start their 3rd sessions of trading next Saturday 21st March… hopefully busy with locals and visitors again !
