Scroll over to Smith Street

How’s this for a unique Valentine’s Day gift ? Gooey scrolls !

A few months ago I posted an article asking what’s up in Smith Street ? – another installment in the random series visiting our major shopping areas. The September day that I’d strolled along Smith Street (and back) – but didn’t notice any pop up stores (and not many “for lease” signs…so not a lot of opportunity for pop up either) – and commented how the precinct seemed ready for change. And I suppose that research was pretty hungry (and thirsty) work… if only there’d been a pop-up café or bakery to tempt me along the way…

A couple of months later “Melbourne’s first scroll & coffee boutique” opened quietly on Smith Street, specializing in scrumptious doughy scrolls in wicked flavours… peanut butter & banana, apple & frangipane, cherry & pistachio… Occasionally they do special creations too… not long ago it was a “Pav cruffin” – a meringue swirl and strawberry sitting atop passionfruit curd, in a croissant-style flaky pastry shell.

And now for Valentine’s Day (this Saturday 14th…) they’re preparing more unique pastries…think raspberry & white chocolate, dark chocolate mousse & cherry or rhubarb custard with white chocolate glaze. Okay, a scroll might not be as romantic as a long-stemmed rose, but OMG it’s gotta be more fun !

The Pop Up Scroll concept was developed after seeing the success of specialist bakery concepts sprouting overseas – but also in response to demand for pastries locally. The Eat A Scroll team had another café in Ivanhoe until recently – their cream cheese cinnamon scrolls were a constant sell-out, with people travelling “from near and far” to purchase. And that success seems to have followed them to Smith Street – the shop is patronised by local workers and residents, but also now becoming a destination from further afield…

The scroll shop was due to stay in Smith Street until May (6 months) – but now there’s hope it will extend… The building is slated for demolition eventually – in the meantime the kitchen is busy out back (all pastries are made on site) and the ‘till is ringing out front !
