Testing concepts, testing grounds
New life for an under-utilised space on the edge of our CBD…
For over 25 years there has been a large parcel of land lying vacant on City Road, just behind the Victorian Arts Centre (nestled under the edge of St. Kilda Road). The space (2000sq.mtrs, owned by the State of Victoria) is reserved for arts purposes, but not much was happening down there… except a healthy growth of weeds and urban debris. Then sometime in 2012 Arts Victoria considered the site for temporary installations – the initial use entitled “Testing Grounds” has established an incubating space for artistic / community events and activities – testing concepts and exploring opportunities for those “arts purposes”.
Testing Grounds is an initiative of Arts Victoria, designed and managed by the creative team at These are The Projects we do together. Over the next 12 months or so they will host a variety of performances and workshops, screenings and projections, artists-in-residence and more… they have a long list of activities planned and a longer list of Expressions of Interest still to be approved !
This weekend Testing Grounds will host events for White Night Melbourne – a children’s wonderland of activities and spaces… as well as the culmination of a monumental artistic work by Ivan Sikic – the excavation of unwanted soil from the site and painted pink every 4 hours (um, there’s a licensed bar on site if you need a little sustenance while you watch the dirt being dug and painted…)
What – an open-air space offering a range of artistic and creative activities…
Where – 1 to 23 City Road, Southbank
When – 9am till 9pm Sunday to Thursday, 9am till 11pm Friday and Saturday
