We’re in the pop up season !
So it’s Christmas soon… ?
It seems I’ve spent a lot of time in and around the Melbourne CBD lately, working with pop up customers rushing to open their stores in time for the busiest sales season. It happens this week every year… the days around the start of December see a flurry of “temporary retail” installations pop up as brands make the most of the pre-Christmas spending frenzy…
One of the busiest locations for pop up right now must be Melbourne Central (we recently published the feature on a Melbourne landmark… a style-laden destination for pop up retail). Here’s a selection of their current pop-up activations :
This week The Cube space on level 2 (mid way between LaTrobe and Lonsdale Streets) features a range of slinky summer “wet wear” from Kini Swimwear – open daily ‘till Sunday 6th December.
The Body Shop has taken over the Shot Tower Square pop up space, with a purpose-built structure promoting Christmas gift ideas (and a spin-to-win competition)
Also in Shot Tower Square is the usual 100 Squared designer market – spruced up for the busy retail season. 100 Squared offers a rotating collection of funky and emerging designers the opportunity to showcase their talents (and products…) – currently nestled under a tall fluro-yellow steel structure (certainly not a traditional Christmas tree)
One of those emerging designers has just opened another outlet within Melbourne Central – not far along from Shot Tower Square, on Shot Tower Alley (leading through to the Swanston / LaTrobe Street corner). Grandma Funk describe themselves as “a Melbourne born and based fashion label run by a team of starry eyed individuals…”
Perhaps more main-stream is the Nestle Kit Kat Studio – a colourful kiosk dedicated to exploring the possibilities of custom-made chocolate snack fingers. We mentioned their initial Sydney pop up back in August – that concept store sold over 25,000 units. But be prepared to wait a while for your special-order creation (last orders are taken 3 hours prior to store close…) The Melbourne Kit Kat Studio will be on the ground level until 17th January 2016.
Just off-side from the main Melbourne Central interior (in the old Diesel space) is “performance roadwear” brand Rapha… opened last weekend and popping up now at 202 Little Lonsdale Street.
The RMIT Design Market is on level 2 at the Emporium end – “some of the best new work from emerging artists and designers from the RMIT community”. Several stalls offer unique jewellery and sculpture pieces, furniture and homewares, fashion and textiles… all original (and on sale !)
