whats been popping in Sydney ?

…as you might expect, our friends in sunny Sydney have been busy with some great pop ups….. here’s a sample of recent installations :

A couple of months ago we commented on the Brilliant innovation from Nike and The Locals – very impressed with their clever link to the Olympic Games theme (scheduling their Sydney store openings to the London time-zone)

For 4 days in September, Toshiba hosted a Pop Up Lounge in busy Martin Place, showing a range of their tablets, notebooks and TVs… the products were not available to purchase but visitors were encouraged to get comfy in the lounge setting and test-drive all the gadgets….

The Sunglasses Hut floating store was moored at Darling Harbour again in mid November, offering a unique experience aboard their pontoon… The opening party was attended by Sunglasses Hut global ambassador Georgia May Jagger (daughter of Sir Mick and Jerry Hall), whilst the store itself offered around 350 pairs of very fashionable eyewear…. not so much a retail event for Sunglasses Hut, but more of a great marketing exercise for the brand.

Also in November, Topshop opened a pop up within it’s new George Street store. And again… not as a sales event for their own brand but as host to other businesses… By inviting complementary brands into their store they hoped to attract more customers to their own products….In the first week (of their 3-week event), Topshop teamed up with a hair and beauty salon, later followed by a florist – and then a celebrity chef.

Following a successful launch in Melbourne (from 29th November, 4500 visitors over 4 days) The Cool House moved north and set up shop at Pacific Bondi Beach for another 10 days. Every beautiful piece of furniture, accessory and artwork was for sale… as well as the stunning penthouse venue itself ! (The Lighthouses start at $4.5million) And this is just the start of things… in 2013 The Cool Hunter intends to host these boutique events again in New York and London…

Only just finished in Paddington (16th December) was the Designer Sales Australia Pop Up – offering a range of local and international fashion labels at heavily discounted prices…. they’re already promising to pop up again soon !

Just a few days ago MakMak opened a Christmas Pop Up shop for macarons at 601 King Street Newtown – only until 15th January (in preparation of their permanent store re-opening at the same address in March). MakMak is something of a success story in the macarons craze – they employ 8 chefs hand-making up to 5,000 of those colourful delights every week…

And that doesn’t cover the dozens (hundreds ?) of other events which have been popping up all over Sydney recently…. in the CBD of course but also Paddington, Surry Hills, Newtown and Alexandria…. over in Neutral Bay, across in Leichardt… out further, and everywhere in-between…
