Fed Square pop up structures

Solid structures provide plenty of pop up options in Melbourne’s CBD.

Melbourne’s Federation Square must be one of the highest-profile public spaces in Australia – wide open to a major city intersection, opposite the Flinders Street train station and on the banks of our Yarra River… it is a favourite meeting point for tour groups and Tinder dates (so I’m told…) The concourse of “Fed Square” hosts many and varied events throughout the year… some are fleeting (concerts, public rallies, markets and festivals…) whilst others stay a while longer.

For the past couple of months the Samsung Galaxy Studio pop up has been housed in a steel shipping container, showing the full range of mobile technology devices currently on offer from Samsung… the new Galaxy Note8 and the full Gear range (fitness and VR). The event has been co-hosted by radio station KIIS 101.1 and offers masses of prizes ($100,000 in cash, holidays and Samsung products). But it all finishes tomorrow (Friday 3rd November)

Last week another container arrived, to house Seance. This is a sensory / theatrical experience, a kinda-spooky immersive performance (just in time for Halloween) – the “audience” sit in a cramped space with their hands on a table, in total darkness, wearing headphones… The performance runs for 15 minutes (although “not everyone makes it through… at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival earlier this year sessions had to be aborted midway so audience members could get out”#). Um, not for me I’m afraid… Sessions need to be booked online – $20 for 15 minutes.

One of our local Melbourne event suppliers – Spacecube – has also dropped smaller units into Fed Square in the past, including the eye-catching Audi A3 and Dyson installations.

Whilst Federation Square offers great exposure to masses of Melburnians (and visitors), it can be a little tricky to work in and around… events need extensive logistical planning. For one thing it all sits over railway tracks (weights and loadings need to be carefully calculated), there’s a web of cables and lighting overhead (cranes have limited access)… and the surfaces are stepped or undulating, nothing is level. There’s limited parking for the event bump in / bump out – and a constant sea of pedestrians, strollers and wheelie-walkers to navigate ! (…many of those pedestrians have their attention focused / eyes glued to one of those “mobile technology devices”…)
