Street-side pop up spots in Melbourne’s CBD !

The City of Melbourne invites new applications for their “smallest shops”.

A couple of years ago (August 2015) we discussed those tiny “street trading cylinders” doted around Melbourne’s CBD, as great opportunities for street-side pop up shops. That article has been quite popular and attracted quite a bit of interest… In 2015 we provided web links for details and enquiries – but it seems those pages have changed. Thankfully one resourceful reader has tracked down the new links – and shared them with us (thanks Alyson !)

Here’s the original editorial (but with updated web links…) :

As far as location goes… you can’t get much closer to “foot traffic” than having a shop right out on the pavement of a busy shopping street ! For the past 4 years or so, the City of Melbourne has provided unique retail outlets within a number of tall steel cylinders, dotted around the CBD. Each cylinder opens up to reveal a tiny retail space (less than 2 square metres) – perhaps that’s a challenge to many businesses but it’s a great opportunity for others… (to think small, but clever !) Recent pop up tenants have included potted plants, hair extensions, a juice and snack bar – even a French creperie.

The City of Melbourne has opened applications for new and existing “Street Trading Cylinder” operators, offering licences of up to 3 years – but also short-term stays. They will assess applications based on the uniqueness and innovation of a concept, quality and presentation, its’ business viability and environmental sustainability.

Applications for casual street traders can be made via the City of Melbourne’s Casual Street Trading web pages. Currently (March 2018) there are dates available in April and May (but “subject to change as new applications are approved”)

Details of longer-term “street trading in a public place” opportunities within the City of Melbourne are described at   www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/business/permits and approvals/street trading/pages/long term street trading

I asked a question back in 2015… do other cities offer “small shop” spaces ? Please let us know if you see similar footpath outlets !
